As the doomed Cedric Diggory he had a short-lived but major role in the fourth outing in Harry Potter world. He then reached mega-stardom in the Twilight series as Edward Cullen. A vampire with existential crises and a major jones for a mouth-breathing, petulant, and determinedly un-sexy and clumsy schoolgirl.
He then went onto a few slated performances. In Remember Me a movie I loved. The whole production was vilified due to (no spoilers) its end twist.
Then came the Maps to the Stars. A powerhouse study of the seedy psychological damage suffered by the polar ends of the Hollywood movie populace. He plays a struggling extra. This is not a date night or lads/ladies in movie, but it is a brilliant one none the less. He moved into similarly dark tones for the highly-praised Good Time A film I was not that enamored with personally.
Then came the news he was next in line for the caped crusader. I thought it was a brilliant idea. I love Robert Pattinson. It was like a coin-drop. A perfect choice. The right mood, the right physique, the right chin for god's sake!
I think it is an inspired choice. a man who has done the teen-idol thing and survived it, then equally rode out the avant-garde and think-piece stuff. I predict a great movie.
